And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)
We are ordinary people living in a collapsing society.
In Whom do we place our faith? It’s hard not to have expectations of what we wish to see happen in the world. We look around us and see things crumbling – we see basic values and rights under attack.
- We want a better world.
- A better government.
- A better society.
What that really means is we want better men & woman, but is that truly possible in a broken sinful world? It may be possible for a season but is it an achievable goal in the long term?
- If the candidate you hope wins in the fall, doesn’t get elected, what will that do to your worldview?
- If those who you want to be brought to earthly justice, doesn’t take place and they seem to be getting away with it, what will that do to your worldview?
- If our expectations of what WE want to happen don’t pan out, what will that do to your worldview?
So what are we really hoping for? A better world, or are we placing our hope in the perfect eternity that awaits us? Our hope is not in things of this world, but the One who will make all things new once sin is removed and His creation restored.
Am I saying we shouldn’t stand up for our rights and try to do our part to make this a better country, a better society and return to the values that helped found this county?
Absolutely not!
BUT, this country was founded because God allowed it. Our Founders were inspired by God when the documents that underpin our country were drafted. Those values have been seriously eroded since then, and many wish to see a return to what this country was meant to be.
I believe our challenge as believers is to live in hope and with expectation for a better world while we are here, but not to become so invested in things of this world we fail to look at the eternal perspective of our limited time here on earth compared to where we will be spending eternity.
We are called to live a life of peace not because of what is happening around us but because of what has happened within us. That is what allows us to see the events of the world and not be shaken.
Thoughts?
(NOTE: I originally wrote this 4 years ago in May 2020. This came up in my Facebook Memories today. Seems even more relevant today, doesn’t it?)
