If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
I’ve worn glasses since the third grade. On a regualr basis I need to go have my eyes checked and get a new prescription. One of the side effects of living in this mortal body…
I get my eyes checked not necessarily because I think I can’t see anymore, but to determine I needed new glasses. Whenever my prescription is updated and the new ones arrived things look so sharp and crisp! It is always amazing how my vision has degraded without me being able to notice. That’s because it happens so slowly that you don’t notice on a day to day basis.
When we come to faith and accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, he gives us new “lenses” with which to view the world around us. If we truly submit our lives to him, we never see the world around us in the same way again. Things that used to give us pleasure and delight should no longer attract us.
When we focus on our problems or events around us, we are near-sighted and can become troubled and anxious. But when we shift our focus, and keep our eyes on Jesus, things take on a different view.
It reminds me of the old song with a simple, yet profound message:
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.”
We must develop eyes for eternity.
