“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
When we accept the gift Christ provided and are a new creation in Him, we are not made over in the sense that we disappear, but Christ in us makes us new, yet the same.
“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” (Romans 8:29)
Our individuality still remains, and it is through our daily journey that WE are invited to shed off things no longer needed in us, and to put on the new spiritual clothes available to us so that we would be made to look like Him.
“When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” (1 Corinthians 13:11-12)
None of this is forced on us. We can stay saved and not grow in Him, but that is not His wish for us. Would you have your children stay children forever? No! We see them grow, learn and move into adulthood, no longer seeking and being satisfied with the things that once held their attention.
Christ’s desire is the same for us – to see us grow and mature spiritually, becoming more like him daily. It is a journey that never ends as long as we are in these mortal bodies.
Think on this as we prepare to enter into a new year. One in which we remember daily not who we were, but who we are in Him.
