“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.” (1 Cor 2:12-13)
Our minds are fertile grounds. What grows there leads to words and to actions. Our mind can just as easily produce good thoughts or bad thoughts but there is no neutral ground. Something is going to take root there and its up to us to decide what it will be. How do you start? You have to intentionally pay attention to your thoughts.
Your phone and computer have many programs that run in the background that you don’t know are running, but they are vital to keeping your phone/computer running. Our thought life can be like this. We all have thought programs running in the background that we need to inspect and realize what is running. Only then can we start to focus on specific thoughts to replace. When a computer repair person looks to find out why a computer isn’t running correctly one of the first things they need to do is determine what exactly is running and only then can they know where to start.
It’s the same way with our thought life. We need to run a “thought inspector” to take inventory of what our minds are thinking about, and what thought patterns are running in the background so they can be brought to the forefront to be dealt with. If it’s a good healthy thought it should be reinforced! It it’s unhealthy it needs to be replaced with a God-centered healthy thought!
Many people spent more time and resources making sure their computer or phone is protected than their thoughts! Jealously guard your mental hard drive just like you guard the hard drive on your computer. If you know you have a virus on your computer what do you do? You uninstall the program that is carrying it and get rid of it! It’s the same analysis with our minds. Don’t allow anything to take root that will cause your thoughts to run counter to what they were created to do.
Our minds were created to think on things of God, and if we choose not to, then the enemy will seek that fertile ground for his own to plant seeds of doubt, fear, confusion or anything else that runs counter to the glory of God. So it’s important that we keep our minds running with clean and healthy thoughts.
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4–5)
When Jesus fought temptation, He knew that the only weapon capable of defeating the enemy was the Word itself, and he used specific scriptures to counter wrong thoughts.. (Matthew 4:1–11)
Like many things in life, getting started is often the hardest step.
Once you start to look at what thought patterns are going on, we’re on the road to getting healthier! Many of us don’t realize the depth of the thought patterns we allow to run free in our minds that need to be reigned in and replaced.
