Faith v. Common Sense

Without faith it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6)

First, dictionary definitions:

  • Faith: The assent of the mind to the truth of a proposition or statement for which there is not complete evidence; belief in general. In theology, spiritual perception of the invisible objects of religious veneration; a belief founded on such spiritual perception.
  • Common Sense: Sound judgment not based on specialized knowledge. Ordinary sensible understanding; one’s basic intelligence which allows for plain understanding and without which good decisions or judgments cannot be made.

Now let’s look at this on a practical basis: Every time you venture out in the life of faith, you will find something in your common-sense circumstances that flatly contradicts your faith.

Common sense is not faith, and faith is not common sense; they stand in the relation of the natural and the spiritual.

It comes down to this – who are you going to trust in this life, God and His perfect love for you, or a man made natural sense of what is right? Well, when you phrase it that way it sounds rather obvious, but if we are honest with ourselves we live our life much differently. We make decisions based on what feels right according to our own common sense of life, rather than looking to see where God is providing opportunities to build our faith.

Choose today to be aware of whether you are living a life of faith rather than a life of common sense!
