Distraction in the Air

“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience…” (Ephesians 2:1-2)

Have you noticed this verse before? I’m certain that most of us have heard this verse before in the context of the passage where Paul is telling the church in Ephesus about God’s Grace and Faith and how it changed them. But there is a section in verse 1 that should sober all of us – “…following the prince of the power of the air…” referring to the control satan has over this world in his temporary kingdom.

Think of how this verse applies to the world around us and the power of the air – internet, TV, radio, etc. For those with eyes to see the influence of the enemy over all that it carries is evident. What used to be subtle is now in our face. We can see it in TV shows, movies, and other forms of entertainment. We watch TV “programs” without understanding that it is how the enemy wants to program us, and desensitize us to what should horrify us. You see, satan is playing the long game. He is content to slowly draw us away from God, distracted from the amazing creation around us that testifies to the existence of God and entering into the word of self focus, where our thoughts and actions are wrapped around us. They may be well intentioned thoughts and actions – there are a lot of good people on this planet living good lives, but that is not why we were created.

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” (Colossians 1:16)

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)

We have a purpose here on earth, and one of the most powerful tools the enemy has is to use the power of the air to distract us from that glorifying God in all we do, think and speak.
