Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. (John 13:13)
I remember being in high school and longing for the days when school would be over and I could just live life, which at that time sounded a lot like being able to sleep in and do what I want.
We all know now that life is hard, and we actually never stop learning. Actually I need to rephrase that – we never stop having OPPORTUNITIES to learn. Whether we take advantage of them is another thing, but the point it we are always have the chance to learn something. And we always get to choose who we learn from.
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)
Christ desire is that we submit to His school and become taught and mastered by Him. Opportunities will be before us daily, sometimes hourly! We are to do our homework (spending time in the Word and time in prayer) and show up for “class” ready to learn. When we are grounded in the Word we are so much more able to see the God in our daily events, and able to ask what the lesson is on them for us.
Christ is not always a gentle teacher but He is always a loving one, who wants the best for us. We ultimately get to choose if we want to learn from the the lessons placed before us. Sometimes we do, and other times we don’t and our stubbornness usually means the same lesson will come to us over and over until we learn and are ready for the next one.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that we are to just be spiritual students. The point of school is to get a degree so you can go into the world and do something with your knowledge, right? In the same manner, the point of our spiritual “school” is to gain spiritual knowledge so we can point others to the same Master and Teacher.
That is our commission as His students.
