Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48)
“I love humanity, it’s people I don’t like.” – Charles Schulz
You know the feeling. You’re out shopping, eating dinner, etc. and you see someone from work, church, or your neighborhood and you go down a different aisle rather than have even a brief interaction with them. Why do we do this? And why don’t we realize that we probably bring out that reaction in others? We are called to be salt and light to everyone, not just those we like to talk to.
“For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:46-48)
And who do we think we are – were we so loving towards God before we made Christ our Lord? If we are honest with ourselves and look at our thoughts, actions and deeds before we were saved should have repelled the the Creator of the universe. Yet, even though we lived a life unworthy of his grace and affection, He still carried out His plan for Christ to be the living sacrifice that would enable us to be with Him for eternity.
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
Think about that. He cared enough for YOU to be with Him forever to do that. There are people around us in this lost and dying world who need to see that same love and acceptance modeled toward that. Why? Not so that we can be thought of as being so humble, loving or caring but for one purpose.
That we become invisible and they see Christ through us.
We are not to be flashing neon lights attracting attention to ourselves, but plain and simple road signs that point the way to the correct destination.
When Jesus was here on earth there were many who did not accept Him with open arms, yet there were crowds who came to see and hear Him, especially sinners and those who were not living a good Godly life. Why? I believe it’s because they could tell He genuinely loved them and wanted to help them. In fact, just days before the Romans crucified Him, we are told “The large crowd listened to him with delight” (Mark 12:37)
Choose today to let others see Jesus in you when they interact with you.
