Unseen Prayer

When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. (Matthew 6:6)

We make talking to God so mysterious, and satan loves to build on that by making it a special thing we do, rather than a part of life. God doesn’t want it to be this special contrived thing we do – he just wants to hear us talk to Him.

Think of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof – his relationship with the Father was conversational that was part of his day. When something came up, he talked with Dad.

The enemy also wants us only to talk to God when we need something or are in trouble. What a sorry relationship it would be if the important people in our lives only came to us at those moments.

I try (and often fail) to make turning to God an automatic response in my mind throughout the day as things take place – an important phone call, a conversation with a client, an interaction with someone in public, an important piece of news about someone I know, a news story, etc. You get the idea.

Our day is filled with information that comes at us, or interactions with people. Each are opportunities for a conversation with God. That doesn’t always mean we drop to a knee and spend hours in prayer, but that we have a constant running conversation with God as we go through our day. Don’t think that because I’m writing this I have this down pat. There are stretches of time in my day where I’ll look and see that I was so busy living life that I forgot to include God.

As we look at the world around us our day provides us with constant opportunities for prayer. Just the news alone should have us in continual prayer over things taking place around us. Add to that multiple times we are presented with things to be thankful and grateful for: Not just that we wake up with breath in our lungs for another day but recognizing that the God of the universe not only created us, but then provided us with the way to live with Him eternally.

Don’t make prayer mysterious or hard. Just talk to God and let Him hear your heart. Pray with a heart that has eyes for eternity.
