A New King Daily

“And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite staying in the remote mountains of Ephraim. He took for himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah” (Judges 19:1)

The above verse is one of many in the book of Judges that refer to the nation of Israel without a leader. This particular passage covers yet another phase of Israel in those days going through a cycle of Disobedience, Desperation, and Deliverance.

A phrase that occurs regularly in the book of Judges when they were in disobedience is the people would be “doing what was right in their own eyes.” Kind of sounds like America today, right? There is no one standard of what is right, so we each get to conduct ourselves according to what WE think is best.

Warren Wiersbe says “The basic cause of Israel’s plight was their independence from God and their indifference to His law. Nothing can be right when every man does what is right in his own eyes.

In a Verse by Verse Commentary by Bruce Hurt, MD, he says the following: “When Jesus is not on the throne of my heart in the morning, statistically speaking, I am very likely to do what is right in my own eyes in the next 16 waking hours! What about you, beloved? We must crown Him King of our heart every morning (He is always the King, but we need to acknowledge and surrender to His loving Lordship) and rely on His royal gift of the Holy Spirit to walk in a manner worthy of the LORD, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work, all for his glory…”

I get up early on most days to start by spending time in the Word before the day starts, and this adds a rich layer to what we all need to do every morning:

We must crown Him King of our heart every morning.

Without this intentional bending of our knee daily to acknowledge Him in ALL areas of our life, we will also do what is right in our own eyes. While the day ahead is unknown to us, it is not unknown to Him, and we need to rely on Him for grace, mercy and peace as we go through our day with the proper heavenly perspective.

Choose to start the day with a proper foundation so that our limited hours each day will start with aligning our heart with our King.
