Ready for Departure?

It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. (John 13:1)

If you’ve ever been in an airport, you’ve seen the screens covered with flight information. You can be reasonably assured if you pack a bag for your destination, then get on a flight headed for your destination, you will arrive there properly prepared.

John says Jesus knew the time had come for Him to leave this world. He didn’t say it was time for Jesus to die or His existence would be over. It sounds more like Jesus was catching a flight, like He had spent time in this place, but now He was prepared to go somewhere else.

Like Jesus, we are here now, but we are planning for a future life beyond this one. That’s hard to grasp because we are bombarded with messages that tell us we are defined by our earthly existence.

Like Jesus, however, we will one day leave this behind. So, let’s have our spiritual bags properly packed and be prepared to move on to our eternal destination.

What primarily defines your life—the earthly or the heavenly? Strive to be defined by Jesus’ sacrifice and your destination with Him.
