Seeing the Eternal

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
(2 Corinthians 4:18)

I read a quote the other day someone put up on Facebook: “You weren’t born to just pay bills and die.”

I know you’re nodding your head right now, agreeing with this thought, but if we all take an honest appraisal of ourselves, is this how we’re living? I know there have been times in my life where that is exactly what it felt like – I was just working and paying the bills with no dream or vision of what I wanted in my life. Just putting one foot in front of the other and not raising my eyes up to see where I was headed. God has a purpose for all of us. Our job is to figure that out and see what dreams and visions He will implant in us so that when our feet hit the floor in the morning we know what we will be about His plans and purpose for us that day.

Trust me, I don’t have it all figured out, so don’t think I’m writing from this place of perfection. I’m just trying to look deeper into life and ask questions about where I am, where I’m headed and who I’m meant to work with and help along the way.

When we truly start to think about a life purpose is has to involve a vision bigger than ourselves. What it is will be different for all of us. Getting started is often the hardest part, and the first steps can seem so small and insignificant but staying put isn’t an option. For some, just getting away from noise and distraction so that you can think about is a great first step.

In the verse above, Paul is talking about the fact that Christians don’t focus on the here and now. We don’t just look at what is seen by our natural eyes, but we focus on the things of God, the spiritual, the eternal. One pastor said it this way – having “eyes for eternity.”

When we take time to dream and envision our future and make plans, we’re also focusing on what is unseen but we’re asking God to help show us what our possible future could be. For all of us we are capable of so much more than we think of. We put more limits on ourselves that God does.

Take some time to dream about your life.

Ask God to show you what the possible is for you in your future.
