“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Heb 11:1)
Sometimes I envision people with their eyes all scrunched up trying to will themselves to believe. I’ve had conversations with people who wished they could believe in a God that wanted the best for them, but instead they feel that either there isn’t a God, or that He isn’t interested enough in our daily lives to help out.
Those are thoughts that have limits on them, who our God is and what He is capable of. That often translates into limits on what we can do or achieve. These negative thoughts are self-imposed limits we place on ourselves. It’s belief vs. unbelief and it can raise roadblocks in the plans and paths we seek to travel down. These negative thoughts are really lies we are telling ourselves about what we can’t do and are often based on what others have told us about ourselves or past failures or other events that make us believe we have limits on what we can accomplish.
To see a change in our lives, we have to change our thinking. Every action happens as a result of the way we think and what we tell ourselves. When we think positively and talk positively, we beat back self-limiting beliefs. We must start thinking about positive things. If you are a Christian working on your faith and you speak or surround yourself with negative words then you are simply strengthening your unbelief which makes it harder to overcome limiting beliefs. Paul has excellent advice on how we should be directing our thoughts:
We are capable of more than we often imagine we are.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
